The new Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act was assented to on 2025-10-03 and has effect on and after 2027-04-01, and it repeals PIIDPA, the 1993 FOIPOP, Part XX of the Municipal Government Act, and the Privacy Review Officer Act. From that date, a public body has to run a privacy assessment before it starts a system that touches personal information.

    The new Act folds Part XX of the Municipal Government Act into itself, so municipalities, villages and local bodies come under one privacy regime from 2027-04-01. The assessment duty attaches to new projects rather than existing ones, which means the systems being scoped now are the ones it will land on.

  • Suppliers to public bodies

    Cross-border restrictions move out of PIIDPA and into the new Act when PIIDPA is repealed. If you hold a public body's personal information, where it rests and who can reach it is a contract term before it's an architecture choice. We build the controls so the answer is the same in both.

Nova Scotia's new Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act has effect on and after that date. It repeals PIIDPA, the 1993 FOIPOP, Part XX of the Municipal Government Act and the Privacy Review Officer Act, and replaces them with one statute. If you're a public body or a municipality, the practical change is that a privacy assessment becomes a step you take before starting something, not a document you produce afterwards.

Not by itself. Section 53(3) says the requirement doesn't reach a project, program, system or activity undertaken on or before the day the Act comes into force. It bites on new work and on substantial changes to existing work, which is why the time to look at your roadmap is now rather than in 2027.

Yes, today. Nova Scotia's own legislation overview still lists it. It is repealed by section 166 of the new Act, which takes effect 2027-04-01. Anyone selling you a PIIDPA programme without mentioning that date is selling you something with eighteen months left on it.
